Function: verb

Inflected forms:
roasts; roasted; roasting

Meanings:
1 a : to cook (food such as chicken, potatoes, or beef) with dry heat in an oven or over a fire
Examples:
[with object] <He roasted the chicken.>
[no object] <The chicken is roasting in the oven.>

1 b: to dry (something, such as a bean or nut) with heat
Examples:
[with object] <We roasted the peanuts over the fire.>
[no object] <The peanuts roasted over the fire.>

2 [no object] informal : to be very hot
Examples:
<We were roasting in the hot sun.>
<You must be roasting [=baking, sweltering] in that sweater.>

3 [with object] informal : to criticize (someone or something) severely
Example:
